The Chenoweth Massacre was the last major Native American raid in present-day Jefferson County, Kentucky (Louisville Metro). On July 17, 1789, Captain Richard Chenoweth, builder of Fort Nelson, and his family were stationed northeast of present-day Middletown, Kentucky when a large band of Native Americans attacked, killing three Chenoweth children and two of their guards. Chenoweth's wife was shot through the lungs by an arrow, and faked death as one of the men came upon her and sliced a knife into her forehead, only to yank her scalp off in the belief she was dead. Chenoweth's scalpless wife wore a hat for the rest of her days to cover the damage. The guards were set on fire alive upon stakes erected near the springhouse. The Chenoweths were of Cornish origins. The Chenoweth Station and the trails leading to it was a favorite target of the Native Americans because it was isolated from the nearest settlements of Linn Station and the Falls of the Ohio.
